It is never too late to become the musician you always wanted to be

“For the first time, I listened back to my performance and I didn’t cringe.”

Most adults who reach out to us fall into a few camps: they used to play or sing and want to get back into it, it’s been on their bucket list for years, they want to sing their grandkids a lullaby without their voice cracking, they’re in a band and need to nail the songs for an upcoming gig, or they want to hold their own at an open mic night or karaoke.

Wherever you’re starting from, we are happy to help.  And we promise that we won’t make you feel silly!

What You’ll Experience in Lessons

A Welcoming, Judgment-Free Place to Rediscover Music

Adults learn differently than kids, and they hold themselves to a much harsher standard. Most adult students walk in a little embarrassed, half-convinced they’ll sound bad or “should” already know this. That self-consciousness is the bigger obstacle, more than the music itself.

That’s why creating a low-pressure environment matters just as much as teaching technique.

From your first visit, you’re greeted by a team that knows your name and gets to know you and your goals.

We meet you exactly where you are, whether that’s “I haven’t touched a piano since middle school” or “I’ve been gigging for years and want to get better.”

Students often tell us they walked in nervous and left looking forward to next week.

"For the first time, I listened back to my performance and I didn't cringe."

Piano Lessons for Adults

Our piano lessons for adults are built around one idea: you’re here because you want to be. We use a goals-first approach, figuring out what you actually want to play, then building the skills to get you there.

Through piano lessons, adults work on:

  • Proper posture, hand position, and piano technique
  • Reading music
  • Rhythm and coordination
  • Playing with expression and style
  • Building a practice habit that fits your schedule

Lessons are designed to help you reach your unique goals. Your teacher learns what inspired you to take lessons, a song you want to play at a family event, a favorite artist, a piece you gave up on years ago, and design the lesson around that goal.

One of our adult students came to us in his 30s after years away from any kind of music lesson, unsure if he’d feel out of place. Within a few months he told us he was genuinely excited to come in each week, despite a packed schedule, and that lessons had become the one hour where he got to enjoy learning something just for himself again.

Whether you’re returning to piano after decades or sitting down at the keys for the first time, lessons move at a pace that keeps you motivated and not overwhelmed.

Voice Lessons for Adults

Singing as an adult can feel more exposed than almost anything else, since most people haven’t sung in front of anyone since a middle school chorus concert, if ever. Our voice lessons for adults focus on building a healthy, confident voice.

In voice lessons, adults work on:

  • Healthy singing technique so you no longer strain
  • Breathing and support
  • Developing a tone you’re actually proud to hear played back
  • Confidence and expression in the songs you choose

Warm-ups and song choices are chosen to help strengthen your voice, expand your range, and work towards your unique goals.

If you feel nervous walking in, that’s the norm, not the exception. One student described being nervous to sing in front of her teacher even on day one, and said her teacher helped put her at ease almost immediately. She later called it one of the best decisions she’d made, and said she wished she’d started sooner.

Adult students tell us they speak up more, stop apologizing before they sing, and start taking pride in a voice they used to avoid using at all.

Why Adults Choose Our Music Lessons in Huntington

Many adults who come to Heart & Soul Music Academy tried lessons before, as kids, in college, or with a teacher who didn’t quite fit, and they show up a little guarded, unsure if this time will be different.

What they notice right away is that it feels different here.

Here’s what adult students tell us sets our lessons apart.

At Heart & Soul, being a skilled musician isn’t enough. How a teacher works with an adult who’s nervous, rusty, or brand new matters just as much.

Our teachers are experienced musicians, but more importantly, they’re patient and encouraging with beginners of every age. They understand that adult students often carry more self-judgment than kids do, and they know how to work through that.

Clear communication is a priority too. You always know what you’re working on and why, and your teacher adjusts based on your goals, whether that’s mastering one song for a family wedding or building long-term skill.

Behind the scenes, our teachers work closely together and receive ongoing support from our studio director, who has over 15 years of teaching and performance experience. That means consistent, high-quality lessons no matter which teacher you work with.

Strong communication is something adult students notice right away. Any changes to your schedule are communicated to you clearly and in a timely manner, and our admin team is always available to help with rescheduling, questions, or planning.

We offer reliable scheduling, clear expectations, and a professional space to learn in. Lessons start on time, and you always know what to expect.

Heart & Soul isn’t a conservatory. It’s a place built around patience, encouragement, and meeting you exactly where you are.

We work hard to create an environment where:

  • It’s okay to sound rusty, or to have never played at all
  • Nervous, self-conscious students are gently supported, not pushed
  • Ambitious students are challenged at a pace that matches their goals
  • Every student is met without judgment, at exactly the stage they’re at

Adult students often tell us the studio feels like the one part of their week that’s just for them.

Students don’t just notice musical progress, they notice a shift in how they feel about their own voice or playing.

Adult students often share that they:

  • Feel less self-conscious about singing or playing in front of others
  • Look forward to their lesson each week, even on a busy schedule
  • Can finally play or sing the songs that got them started in the first place
  • Notice technical improvement within the first few months
  • Feel ready to perform at an open mic, karaoke night, or their next gig
  • Get unprompted compliments from friends and family on their progress

For some, that progress leads to milestones they didn’t expect when they started: performing at an open mic, singing at a family event, or simply listening back to a recording of themselves without cringing.

While you may not interact with the studio director every week, she’s closely involved behind the scenes, mentoring teachers, and setting the tone for the whole studio.

Performance is always optional, and only ever encouraged when you’re ready for it.

We offer:

  • Student Spotlight performances
  • Holiday Playlist Showcase (virtual)
  • Summer Showcase (in person)

These are low-key, low-pressure ways to build confidence, get comfortable with a few nerves, and celebrate progress alongside other students, kids and adults alike.

We know adult schedules are unpredictable, so we offer options that flex with you.

Questions Adults Often Ask

Here are a few questions adults often ask before getting started.

Q Is it too late for me to start music lessons as an adult?

No. This is the single most common worry we hear, and it’s almost never true. We have students who started in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond, some returning to an instrument they played decades ago, some starting completely fresh. Progress at any age comes down to consistency, not a head start.

Q How long are the lessons?

We offer 30 or 60-minute lessons for adults. Thirty minutes works well if you’re building a habit or have a tight schedule; 60 minutes gives you more room to work on technique and repertoire in the same session.

Q Are piano and voice lessons private or group?

Our piano and voice lessons for adults are private, one-on-one sessions with your own teacher.

Q Can I do both piano and voice lessons?

Yes. Many adult students split their time between the two, either back-to-back in one session or alternating weekly. We’ll help you figure out what fits your goals and schedule.

Q What if I’m nervous or self-conscious about my voice or playing?

That’s completely normal, and it’s the reason most adults hesitate to start in the first place. Our teachers work with nervous beginners constantly. We don’t expect you to sound polished on day one, we expect you to show up, and we take it from there.

Q I used to play or sing years ago. Do I have to start from scratch?

Not usually. Most adults retain more than they think. Your teacher will assess where you’re at in the first lesson and pick up from there, rather than starting you over from zero.

Q I already play in a band, do open mics, or sing karaoke. Can lessons still help?

Yes. Plenty of our adult students come to us specifically to prep for a gig, tighten up a setlist, or feel more comfortable performing live. We’ll focus on the songs and skills that matter most for what you’re already doing.

Q How much should I practice?

It depends on your goals. If you’re working toward something specific, a song for an event, a performance, a long-term skill, more practice gets you there faster. If lessons are more about enjoying the process, practice can be light. Many adult students still make good progress with consistent lessons alone.

"Since I began lessons with Cristina I have received numerous compliments from my musician friends about my singing, which makes me really happy and encourages me in my musical journey."
